Traveling between neighborhoods, in the sense of being able to go from one to another, then return home, is not possible in The Sims or The Sims 2.

@ScreenName000001 , just to let you know, as long as you have a copy of Windows, you can run Sims 2 Ultimate Collection on a Virtual Machine on a Mac. I do it and have no problems. I use Parallels to run Windows and the game runs fine.
The main problem seems to be memories other Sims have are not deleted. Even using SimPE to clean up the memories is iffy because you need to go through every Sim’s character file and you may miss one. 2) Do not delete Sims from the bin. Also is the same problem.
