Between the ages of 2 and 8 months a female quail will lay about one egg a day, and can lay between 150 and 300 eggs per year. After about 9 months, the productivity will decline; most quail live for less than a year in captivity.
What causes quail to die?
Ulcerative Enteritis is an acute, highly contagious disease of chickens and quail caused by the bacterium Clostridium colinum and characterised by ulcers of the intestines and caecae. It can start suddenly and cause high mortality: 100% in quail and 10% in chickens. Turkeys, game birds and pigeons may also be affected.

On average, 70 percent to 80 percent of the nation’s quail population is lost each year; this high mortality rate is off-set by large broods of wild quail.

Ensure that the quails have 14-16 hours of light per day. Don’t exceed 16 hours of light per day as the quails need time without light to be able to sleep. The laying mechanism of quails shuts down if they get below 12 hours of light per day.
Can quail make you sick?
Coturnism is an illness featuring muscle tenderness and rhabdomyolysis (muscle cell breakdown) after consuming quail (usually common quail, Coturnix coturnix, from which the name derives) that have fed on poisonous plants.
Are quails smelly?
Quail smell just like chickens. An equal weight of quail or chickens will have about the same waste and smell about the same. It is easy to control the smell of either. Not crowding the birds is a good start on controlling the smell.
Are quails cuddly?
While Quail are fairly skittish little birds, they tend to recognize their caretakers and eventually become accustomed to your presence. Quail typically don’t like to be held, so don’t expect to make a cuddly pet out of your quail. With that being said, you may train them to tolerate handling when they are young.

They can be diurnal, active during the day, or nocturnal, active at night, depending on the species of quail. Some quails are solitary birds or live in pairs. Other quail species are very social. Some live in small flocks known as coveys.
Are quail Dirty birds?
Their poop doesn’t smell when they are babies. When they grow up though, their feces don’t dry as fast and are quite smelly (sometimes horribly), so that’s not to say they are odorless, but as chicks (for the first few weeks), they don’t smell as bad as other poultry. They don’t consume much feed.
