Not really. Chains of Olympus came out after 2, but Ghost of Sparta came out after 3, so there’s no absolute need to play them really. There’s only one point at which God of War III references Chains of Olympus, but if you read the plot you should be good to go.
Should you play God of War in order?
I recommend the original God of War. That you may get to know Kratos as he’s properly introduced. Then play the prequels in Chronological Order (Ascension, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta), before playing God of War II, III, and IV in that order.
