How is a game stored on a SD card?
If the game is a physical cartridge, it would be stored on the card itself. Digital copies of the game have save data that is stored directly to the SD card. If you were to tranfer the digital game over, then put the SD card from the old 3ds in, then you can play your old copy on your new 3ds with the same data, since it was a digital copy.
