The Hunt, according to Universal Pictures, is based (albeit “loosely”) on The Most Dangerous Game, a 1924 short story by author Richard Connell. In Connell’s story, a hunter named Rainsford finds himself on a remote island, revealed to be the home of a mysterious man with a dark agenda.

Richard Connell was a seasoned writer by the time he wrote The Most Dangerous Game. His references to World War I were also based on his own personal experience because he did serve France during the war. Perhaps some of that experience sparked some of his hunting ideas in the story.
